Araw ng Lahi 2017

Bacolod Homeschoolers - Negros Museum Tour
Kids on the train.

As a group, the Bacolod Homeschoolers Network is continually finding activities that could enhance the learning experiences among our children and foster camaraderie among them. This month of August, in line with the country’s celebration of Buwan ng Wika or Buwan ng Lahi, we had our own little celebration.

We gathered our kids for a tour of the Negros Museum as well as insights about the exhibit entitled Sugidanon: 10 Epics of Panay. We let our children wore traditional Filipino costumes like what kids in regular schools do during their school program.

The Sugidanon Exhibit of Ang Panublion Museum goes to The Negros Museum in Bacolod City. The 10 epics of Panay is a celebration of Visayan literature and include “Tikum Kadlum”, “Amburukay”, “Derikaryong Pada”, “Balanakon”, “Kalampay”, “Pahagunong or Pawikan”, “Pagbihag ni Labaw Donggon kay Sinagnayan”, “Humadapnon”, “Alayaw”, and “Buruhisan”. The exhibit will run until September 30 at the Negros Museum.

The tour started with the guided explaining the different murals about Negros around the museum walls. Then we proceeded to the Sugidanon exhibition. We also toured the JGM Gallery where a toy collection from 65 different countries is house. There are more exhibits on the second floor but since the kids were getting restless with the heat, we just went there for a photo op with a locomotive from Victorias Milling Company on display.

Our tour ended with snacks at an air conditioned room called Tuklas, where the kids had native food like puto and cuchinta. They was also a storytelling session.

Storytelling time.

Since we are a community composed of kids ages 3 to 11, some of the young kids got bored for a while and the heat and humidity also got to them. Thankfully everything got better when they settled in the function room to rest. We were also entertained by fellow homeschoolmate, Johann Tan. Johann is totally blind. He was diagnosed with bilateral retinoblastoma when he was only 10 months old and he is being homeschooled for specialized training. He is blessed with a beautiful voice.

What is retinoblastoma?

Retinoblastoma is a cancer that starts in the retina, the very back part of the eye. is a rare form of cancer that rapidly develops from the immature cells of a retina, the light-detecting tissue of the eye. It is the most common malignant cancer of the eye in children, and it is almost exclusively found in young children. Though most children survive this cancer, they may lose their vision in the affected eye(s) or need to have the eye removed.

It is wonderful to see our young children grew up together as friends in this small community that we have now. The parents help each other while the kids also help take care of each other. We are looking at doing more activities together to strengthen and cultivate the friendships.
